Why current methods of MDF waste disposal need to change

For decades, the disposal of medium density fibreboard (MDF) has been an inconvenient reality of manufacturing and construction, with millions of tonnes of MDF waste generated each year globally. Until now there has been no effective, scalable way to do anything with that waste other than incinerate it for energy or send it to landfill – both of which come at a financial, environmental and reputational cost to businesses operating in increasingly sustainability-focused markets

MDF is notoriously difficult to recycle. Its composition, a mix of fine wood fibres bonded with synthetic resins, makes it incompatible with conventional wood recycling methods. As a result, even manufacturers committed to sustainability often find themselves with no viable alternative to burning or dumping their MDF waste.

This clearly has enormous environmental consequences – incineration releases carbon dioxide and, depending on the resin content, other harmful emissions, while landfilling MDF not only wastes valuable material but also contributes to methane generation and long-term pollution.

Despite growing regulatory and public pressure to reduce waste and decarbonise supply chains, the MDF industry has lacked a scalable, closed-loop recycling solution, until now.
