How recycled MDF is powering the next generation of insulation

The insulation industry is entering a period of rapid change. Rising energy costs, stricter building regulations and the drive towards net zero are reshaping the insulation industry.  It’s no longer judged by its ability to keep buildings warm alone – but also by its contribution to wider environmental goals – cutting embodied carbon and helping future proof supply chains.

At the same time, the construction industry is moving towards modern methods of building. More homes are being manufactured in factories, with prebuilt housing and systems such as structural insulated panels becoming mainstream. These homes are quicker to assemble and demand insulation materials that can deliver consistent quality, strong thermal performance and low environmental impact. With the built environment accounting for around 25% of UK greenhouse gas emissions and construction producing nearly two-thirds of UK waste (222 million tonnes in 2018), the pressure on the sector to find lower-impact insulation is only increasing.

From waste to valuable feedstock

MDF is widely used in furniture, joinery and construction but recycling it has long been a challenge. The bulk of MDF waste has historically been incinerated for energy recovery and whilst this avoids landfill, it does little to unlock the full value of the fibre within the boards.

New technology now makes it possible to disaggregate MDF and recover the fibres in a usable form. Instead of being destroyed, the material can re-enter the production cycle as a high-quality feedstock for insulation. This creates a genuine circular economy solution and reduces the need to source expensive virgin timber. Given that the UK insulation market alone is worth around £1 billion annually, and natural fibre insulation currently makes up just 1–4% of that share, the potential for growth using recycled MDF feedstock is significant.

Recovered MDF fibre is also not a compromise material – it has a long fibre length that makes it particularly well suited for insulation production because the fibres are strong and consistent, enabling manufacturers to create high quality batts with reliable performance. This fibre strength translates into practical benefits for builders and homeowners – recycled MDF insulation provides strong thermal performance, reducing heat loss and helping buildings meet tighter efficiency standards. It also delivers good acoustic properties, supporting quieter and more comfortable living spaces. Independent testing has shown that insulation made from recovered MDF can match or exceed the performance of products made from virgin wood fibre.

Insulation produced from recycled MDF retains many of the natural qualities of wood fibre. It is breathable, which helps regulate humidity within walls and roofs, contributing to healthier indoor environments. In many applications it can also be produced without chemical additives, appealing to customers seeking natural and sustainable materials.

The environmental advantages extend further to recycled MDF insulation which has low embodied energy and low embodied carbon, significantly reducing its footprint compared with conventional products. For comparison, glass wool products have embodied energy of 14–28 MJ/kg, whereas natural fibre insulation sits between 0.9–20 MJ/kg depending on end-of-life treatment. Recycled MDF is positioned firmly in this lower range, delivering a clear environmental advantage. It also locks in carbon for the lifetime of the building, supporting broader carbon capture and storage goals. For developers, architects and manufacturers tasked with demonstrating the sustainability of their projects, these are critical benefits.

Sustainability has also shifted so that it is no longer an optional extra – companies right across the construction supply chain face growing scrutiny from regulators, investors and customers. Green building standards are tightening, ESG reporting is becoming more detailed, and measures such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism are raising the stakes for manufacturers exporting to Europe. By using recycled MDF in insulation, companies can demonstrate clear sustainability credentials. The circular economy story, the reduction in embodied carbon and the avoidance of virgin timber all align with evolving regulatory and investor expectations. This is not only about compliance but also about building trust with customers and positioning brands as leaders in sustainable construction.

 A new era for insulation

The business case for recycled MDF insulation is strong, relying solely on virgin timber exposes manufacturers to cost volatility and supply risks. Recovered MDF fibre provides a lower cost, stable alternative that reduces this dependency. With vast volumes of MDF waste produced every year, the supply of fibre is not only reliable but also abundant, and fibre recovery technology also reduces or removes the cost of waste disposal for MDF producers and creates a new revenue stream. For insulation manufacturers it secures high quality feedstock while strengthening margins and competitiveness.

Wood fibre insulation has been viewed in the past as a niche option, but market conditions are shifting very quickly. Demand for natural, breathable and low carbon products is accelerating and recycled MDF is well placed to take up the change – the sector is moving towards scale. The first commercial site producing insulation from recovered MDF, Pillo, is due to go live in 2026, which will mark a significant step towards mainstream adoption. Other wood fibre products that once seemed specialist are already becoming more widely used, showing that momentum is building.
