MDF Recovery

Craig Bartlett

Managing Director

Craig has a Masters degree in Environmental Management and has been involved with technology development in the wood supply chain for nearly 20 years. He worked as Head of Research & Consultancy at the UK Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) until 2008, developing a wide-range of technological solutions in partnership with industry and academia. He has significant experience of writing, performing and managing complex national and European research and development projects including those from FP5 – FP7. He has secured over £5 million of public sector funding and delivered over 20 projects including those for Innovate UK, WRAP and DEFRA.

It was during his time at FIRA where he began to address the issue of how best to recycle panel board materials, exploring a range of techniques and approaches. Craig played a prominent role in developing a microwave based recycling process route for MDF, which progressed through to its first commercial licence sale in 2007.

In 2008 Craig moved into a business development role for the AIM listed cleantech development company that had licensed the microwave recycling technology. He led the progression of this technology through extensive R&D, testing and trials with end user businesses until a fully costed pilot plant had been designed. The economic downturn prevented further progress as the parent company folded.

MDF Recovery was formed in late 2009 in order to pursue the obvious market opportunity for effective recycling of MDF. Craig utilised his knowledge of funding programmes and network of industry contacts to develop and trial a novel approach that proved to be highly successful.

As Managing Director, Craig continues to lead MDF Recovery toward commercialisation. The MDFR technology is now patented throughout Europe and across many other territories and the company was proud to win the Timber Trade Journal’s Innovative Product Development award in 2017.
